Felt chair by Marc Newson, 1985.
The Felt chair established a design vocabulary for an entire series of furniture designs by Marc Newson. Without the formal restriction of legs, the folded form creates a sinuous outline with semi-enclosure of space within the shape of the chair. It is bold design that changes its aesthetic and sense of balance depending upon how the chair is approached.
The design evolved into different materials (wicker, fibreglass and aluminium) and themes carried through to Orgone and later series of furniture.
‘I wanted to do something with really thick felt, the kind Joseph Beuys used and in retrospect I can see the influence of Japan because at the time I was thinking a lot about origami’
The Felt chair was produced in its original format by Cappellini, though production ceased whilst the fibreglass version continues. A wicker version is produced by Idee in Japan and a limited edition Alufelt was self produced in 1993.
Marc Newson is one of the world’s most celebrated designers, working across disciplines in furniture, lighting, transport and industrial designs. His limited edition works are highly valued and have established world records for contemporary design.
